About me
All you wanted to know and were to afraid to ask
Tena koutou
About 20 years ago or so i was itching to find out more about who i was, where i came from and who had the unfortunate experience of being able to say they were related to me.
Well, actually i really wanted to be able to say who all the famous people were that i was connected to.
But seriously, my mother was part Maori and part Scottish. My father was part Irish and part English. The only grandparents of mine born in Aotearoa (New Zealand) were my mothers father, as he was Maori (Ngai Tahu or Kai Tahu) and my fathers mother, who was a second generation Kiwi from English descent. So i had quite a history to discover. And i was extremely curious. I enquired into genealogy and very quickly became hooked. I soon learnt that the word was whakapapa for my Maori side. It took many years of writing letters, coming across many brick walls, asking lots of questions of my parents and aunties/uncles. I left it to late to ask any grandparents any questions or to discover photos that may have been in their possession.
Eventually i acquired myself with new technology........a computer. I soon found the net and then various genealogy sites. It took a few more years to find whakapapa and Maori sites. I placed a few messages on some of these sites and before long i had discovered a few new relations who were also researching our whakapapa. So here I am..........a few more years down the track, a few more discovered relations, and this website.
Some intimate details of myself. I am the mother of three tamariki, all grown up now with their own tamariki. Well two of them have produced mokopuna for me. Four mokopuna. I live on the Kapiti Coast enjoying the wonderful coast weather. I used to work very much part time as a mental health consumer advocate/advisor, but now i am parenting one of my mokopuna so that keeps me busy enough. My other hobbies include gardening, crosswords, jigsaws, my computer, music, reading, swimming, cycling
In 2007 I finished year one of Te Ara Reo. The previous year I had done Mauri Ora and in 2008 I continued on and finished Year Two of Te Ara Reo. Still I thirst for more knowledge of my Maori culture and heritage, and of course history of my whakapapa so who knows what is around the corner for me.
